Healthcare Roundtable: Developing the Next Generation of Culturally Competent Healthcare Leaders

CHI’s workshop brings together healthcare leaders, medical school academics and leaders, providers, patients, pharma, and other stakeholder groups for an innovative and collaborative discussion on how to best equip our future healthcare leaders with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that allow them to adequately treat all patients and communicate with their families. Medical school and other healthcare training curriculums must be designed to appropriately train cultural competence. By proactively beginning to think about culturally competent healthcare leaders of tomorrow, we can begin to make steps towards addressing the broader healthcare disparities and health inequities that afflict the U.S. healthcare system.

Backyard Story Night: Healing Touch

Join Landmarks, Austin’s Backyard Story Night, Dell Medical School and the Humanities Institute to enjoy an evening of stories centered around the theme Healing Touch.

Commissioned for the newly opened Dell Medical School, artist Ann Hamilton created a series of photographs that illustrate touch, something we typically feel rather than see. The project is framed by the idea that human touch is the most essential means of contact and a fundamental expression of physical and emotional care. Hamilton’s larger-than-life portraits will serve as a backdrop for the evening of stories. This event celebrates the human exchanges that occur in public art and health care, as well as the importance of both in the Austin community.

The goal of health care should be creating value, defined as the outcomes that matter to patients over the full cycle of care for the money spent. The difficulty of measuring outcomes means that value creation efforts often focus solely on cost reduction or on improving measures of process, compliance or patient satisfaction rather than meaningful patient outcomes. This workshop introduces the Capability, Comfort and Calm framework, which participants can use to simplify and streamline outcome measurement and evaluation.

What Angels Look For: Investing in Health Care Entrepreneurship

Most entrepreneurs need outside funding at some point during the company life cycle. Fundraising is often one of the more challenging areas of building a company and possibly even more so in healthcare innovation. On top of that, the lifecycle in healthcare can be very different from other verticals. If you are in pharma or medical devices, development is long and uncertain. Your innovation may require clinical trials and FDA approval so you will be needing much higher investments and have to plan for much longer pre-revenue time periods. Early funding often comes from angel investment groups, but what do angel investors look for in healthcare innovation?

Join us as John Paulos talks about the Central Texas Angel Network’s (CTAN) interest in healthcare innovation, what drives angels, what the group is looking for, the benefits to your company and how you can best prepare yourself for an application.

The traditional boundaries between Public, Private and Federal Healthcare delivery have become less rigid and more permeable as healthcare requirements have changed. Gone are the days when a healthcare system could define its beneficiary population as belonging to its system alone. Patients cross the boundaries between healthcare systems for reasons such as access, capacity, and cost. Traditionally, this migration between healthcare systems would be discouraged through financial measures or by threat of disenrollment. Today healthcare systems rely on each other to provide services that they cannot provide for financial, geographical or accessibility reasons.

Digital health is one of the most explosive areas of innovation with software products aimed at wellness and medical applications. Depending on the intended application, software may meet the FDA’s definition of a medical device and be subject to an extensive set of FDA regulatory requirements. Therefore, Developer Beware! It is critical for innovators to know early in the development cycle whether their software is or is not a medical device and, if so, what regulatory requirements apply so they can accurately plan the time and cost to market. Recent actions by the FDA and Congress in the last two years have dramatically changed the regulatory landscape for digital health products.
